Expo와 사회적 자본
본 연구는 2030 부산월드엑스포 유치 추진을 계기로 월드엑스포와 사회적 자본과의 관계에 대한 탐색적 연구를 목적으로 하였다. 사회적 자본은 시민사회를 이루는 중요 한 요소인데 엑스포는 지역적으로나 국제적으로 사회적 자본을 창출하고 입증하기 위 한 아주 훌륭한 플랫폼 역할을 한다. 사회적 자본은 ‘사회구성원 간의 신뢰와 호혜적 네트워크를 통해 공공의 이익을 창출하는 무형의 공공재’로 사회구성원 간의 공동의 이익을 창출뿐만 아니라 사회적 소속감과 사회 통합에 기여한다. 엑스포 개최를 통해 참여자들은 인류가 봉착하고 있는 현안을 전 세계인들과 함께 공유하고 해결책을 모색 하면서 광범위한 상호 관계를 형성하고, 협력관계와 신뢰를 구축함으로써 사회적 자본 을 축적할 수 있다. 그러나 엑스포의 이러한 사회문화적 측면에 관한 연구는 그리 많 지 않다. 2030 부산월드엑스포 유치활동을 계기로 사회 공동체가 지향하는 사회적 가 치를 공유하고 신뢰를 형성하는 한편, 경제적 효율을 제고하는 사회적 자본과의 관계 를 중심으로 월드엑스포를 이해하고 연구할 수 있는 체계를 마련하여 2030 부산월드엑 스포를 유치하는 정책 방향에도 도움을 주고자 한다.
The Expo and Social Capital
Expos are global events dedicated to solving humanity’s fundamental challenges by offering a journey inside a chosen theme through engaging and immersive activities (BIE, 2022). As such, the Expo serves as a platform for creating social capital. Social capital is an “intangible public goods that create public interests through trust and reciprocal networks” that not only creates common interests among members of society but also contributes to a sense of social belonging and social integration, enhancing national competitiveness and improving well-being. By forming a comprehensive mutual relationship through Expo hosting, people worldwide can come together to share the biggest problems facing humanity and seek solutions. However, there are not many studies on such sociocultural aspects of the Expo. Therefore, additional plans and efforts are needed to maximize the storage of social capital by understanding the social capital being formed and hosting the Expo. Such efforts will enable the Expo to function as a hub of global communities that creates overall trust, cooperation, and social networks among citizens.
